Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder caused by word associations as a young toddler. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized this school wasn't suitable for her. Ford applied instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered the position she wanted on her third try. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford was not able to finish her studies in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate was recognized as a stand-up comedian, which has been added to her repertoire in 1996.
